When the road worker Igor and his colleagues clear among the twisted rebar, it is a job associated with great risks.
– We are working with two destroyed bridges after the occupation. One bridge was bombed, the other was blown up, says Igor to SVT.
The area outside the city of Izium was recently occupied by Russia. During the retreat, the Russian troops blew up all important bridges and mined the roads.
– It is mined everywhere here. Yesterday, two road workers were blown to death when they ran over a mine, but we follow all the regulations and for a whole week minesweepers went here, in two rounds. We don’t go outside the area for security reasons, says Igor.
Attacks against infrastructure a conscious strategy
Russia’s strategy has been to bomb heating plants, power lines and railway networks, and the attacks on infrastructure continue.
– Nobody asks about the salary. Everyone just asks if there will be gas to go out and work. Volunteers and ambulance drivers driving wounded from the area can call and say: “Build a road” – then we will, Andriy Alekseyev, head of the Road Office in Kharkiv.
