In So much better, Nordman’s Håkan Hemlin opens up about his long battle against drugs. With the success of the 90s came the money. And that’s when he started “partying”.
– He became a party junkie every day for eight years. It was in arms, legs and feet and everywhere, he says So much better.
At its worst, he had severe sleep problems and ended up in a car accident when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed.
– I flew out through a rear window and the car broke into three parts, he says.
The News Morning appearance was the last straw
Everything reached its peak after a famous appearance in Nyhetsmorgon in 1997, where Håkan was clearly influenced.
– I feel so bad when I see that clip. I can start crying now. It’s damn unpleasant, says Håkan when he remembers back to that day.
The other part of Nordman, Mats Wester, says that he became co-dependent when he began to understand what was going on. He put his foot down after the performance in Nyhetsmorgon.
– Then I didn’t see Håkan for seven years. I never thought I would see Håkan in life after that, he says.
Then it turns around
The turning point came in 2011 when Håkan couldn’t take it anymore and took help to get rid of his drug addiction.
– But I have had a few relapses, admits Håkan.
The relapses have meant that Mats can no longer tour together.
– I will never get any more chances, Håkan agrees and says that Mats absolutely does not deserve all the trouble.
Should have stopped
Had Somuch better contacted Nordman, the duo would not have continued, says Mats.
– Now we take one day at a time, concludes Håkan.
