It was an even start to the semi-final between the Netherlands and Argentina.
But just ten minutes before half-time, Argentina struck. After a brilliant assist by world star Lionel Messi, Nahuel Molina was able to poke home the lead and the crowd exploded and shouted Messi’s name.
With about a quarter of the game remaining, Messi would crown his fine effort with a goal. This time with a cold penalty from eleven meters.
But it would be dramatic and the Netherlands would catch up.
With about seven minutes left, Wout Weghorst reduced the deficit with a delicious header. And he would strike again. In the trembling final seconds, the Netherlands offered a delicious free kick variant and equalized to 2-2 via the striker and enormous joy erupted.
The match went to extra time where Argentina pressed hard but did not score a goal.
However, Argentina would win and advance to the semi-finals.
The match went to penalty kicks. There, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez became a big hero after saving two penalties and Argentina managed to score four out of five. The decisive penalty put Lautaro Martinez there and great scenes of joy erupted on the pitch and in the stands.
In the semifinals, Argentina will face Croatia, who surprisingly beat favorites Brazil on penalties.
