On Thursday, the trial begins against a 45-year-old man in Karlskrona who is suspected of war crimes committed in Syria ten years ago.
According to Säpo, he was one of the first Swedish jihadists who traveled down to wartime Syria.
In a propaganda video, the man is seen together with other Swedes from the jihadist group Kataib El Mujahedin. The video was directed and spread to Swedes right at the beginning of the Syrian war, while the group later became part of IS.
– Much of the material he is accused of has been published by himself. He himself has posted pictures of himself posing with weapons and pictures of corpses and Syrian soldiers who have been killed and maimed and in some cases beheaded, says terrorism researcher Magnus Ranstorp.
The preliminary investigation contains some material that Säpo has classified as confidential.
The 45-year-old risks between four years and life in prison, and if he is convicted, he will be one of the few who have actually been sentenced in Sweden for war crimes in Syria.
