Imprisoned for more than a year in Georgia, following his return from exile, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was poisoned during his detention, according to a medical report released by his legal team. Hospitalized following a hunger strike, the former president would not benefit from the necessary care when he would have lost more than forty kilos since his detention.
Mikheil Saakashvili is in mortal danger. This is the message that his legal team wanted to convey on Monday, December 5, by unveiling a medical report which confirms the presence of heavy metals in his body. According to American toxicologist David Smith, traces of mercury and arsenic have appeared in the former leader’s body since his detention in October 2021.
Convicted in absentia in 2018 for abuse of power, Mikheil Saakashvili, who denounces this verdict, has been hospitalized for a year after a fifty-day hunger strike.
“ An increased risk of imminent mortality »
But despite the fact that he is taken care of, the opponent does not receive the necessary care. It would even be the opposite, according to the authors of this report who believe that the medical treatment which was diagnosed to him would be harmful to him. ” There is an increased risk of imminent mortality without adequate treatment, say these experts.
The Georgian authorities reject these accusations and insist that the former president receives the necessary treatment. But according to a doctor who chairs a council of doctors who examined Mikheil Saakashvili, he does suffer from a number of serious illnesses. For the Georgian President Salome Zurabishviliit is up to the courts to decide whether he should be released for health reasons.
