Lionel Messi and his Argentina were awarded a penalty after VAR review.
A penalty that was seemingly dubious – so dubious that the Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny bet with Messi.
– I told him that “I bet 100 euros that there will be no penalty”, says Szczesny to Norwegian TV2.
Argentina fairly beat Poland 2–0 and advanced to the World Cup finals as group winners. But it took a while before the Argentinians got the hang of it Wojciech Szczesny in the Polish goal. The Juventus goalkeeper who played great during the group stage and who was a decisive factor in Poland also progressing to the round of 16.
Got a penalty
With just over five minutes left in the first half of yesterday’s meeting, Argentina were awarded a penalty, then just mentioned Szczesny fluttered with his left hand in the face of Lionel Messi. But after VAR review, the referee still pointed to the penalty spot – a ruling that the Polish goalkeeper did not agree with. Something that was made even more clear after the final whistle.
– We talked before the penalty. I told him that “I bet 100 euros that there won’t be a penalty”. So I lost the bet against Messi, says Szczesny to Norwegian TV2.

“I’ll probably be suspended now”
However, the Pole believes that what could lead to consequences.
– I don’t think it’s legal to do that in a World Cup. I will probably be suspended for that but I don’t care right now, he says and laughs.

The punishment then? It saved Szczesny – who still had to capitulate in the second half. And don’t give any money to Messi despite the lost bet.
– I’m not going to pay him. Come on, he probably doesn’t care about a hundred euros.
