Mauna Loa began erupting on Monday. The amazing sight has attracted curious onlookers. The eruption does not always threaten nearby settlements for the time being.
Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, continues to erupt. The volcano in Hawaii started erupting for the first time in 38 years late Monday Finnish time.
According to experts, the lava flowing down the mountainside could cover the highway connecting the east and west coasts of the island of Hawaii as early as this coming weekend.
The slowly flowing lava is now still kilometers from the road.
Hawaii Volcano Observatory researcher interviewed by Uutistoimisto AP Ken Hon said Wednesday that at its current rate, the lava could reach the road in two days. However, he considers it likely that the matter will take longer.
For the time being, the eruption poses no danger to the residents of the local area. However, Hawaii health officials have warned that air quality could deteriorate at any time. If that happens, local residents are instructed to stay indoors.
The volcano is of interest to tourists
According to AP, thousands of curious people have come to admire the erupting world’s largest active volcano on the nearby road.
In addition to Mauna Loa, the smaller Kilauea volcano is currently erupting in Hawaii. Its eruption has continued since September of last year.
In total, Hawaii has no fewer than six active volcanoes.
