The committee that oversees the resolution from 2004 is also mandated to continue its work until 2032. The resolution means that UN member states must adopt laws to prevent, for example, terrorists from getting their hands on nuclear weapons, chemical weapons and biological weapons. It also requires countries to monitor their borders to detect and prevent the spread of weapons and weapon parts.
The Security Council says in the resolution that it is deeply concerned that terrorists and other non-state actors, such as corrupt scientists or people on the black market, should be able to acquire, develop or trade in the weapons.
It is not infrequent that the Security Council finds it difficult to agree. The Russian UN ambassador Vassilij Nebenzija says that the resolution from 2004 is still relevant and stated that the members of the council had a constructive attitude and were flexible in working with it.
