“The relaxation of restrictions can lead to a public health disaster”

The effects of Chinas extraordinary protests can also be seen

There are millions of unvaccinated people in China, says University of Turku professor Lauri Paltemaa.

The Chinese have widely demonstrated against the country’s strict corona policy. Professor at the East Asian Research and Education Center of the University of Turku Lauri Paltemaa said in Monday night’s A-studio that behind the tight corona restrictions is weak vaccination coverage.

– Maybe two thirds have taken the vaccination. The third who haven’t taken it, it’s talking about millions and millions of people on the scale of China.

According to Paltemaa, China also does not use Western vaccines, but develops its own.

CEO of consulting company PRD Group Lasse Liukkonen has lived in China throughout the corona period. According to Liukkonen, who is currently visiting Finland, older age groups in particular are suspicious of vaccines.

– They trust Chinese medicine, which currently does not, however, bring a solution to the coronavirus.

According to Liukkonen, the Chinese are extremely frustrated with the corona restrictions. The background of the protests is people’s desire to live an ordinary life.

– People want to go to work and that their children can go to school. Here, in the course of two to three years, the measure has become full.

According to Paltemaa, China managed to keep the corona under control in the early stages of the pandemic. However, with the variants spreading faster, the layout changed.

Paltemaa sees two different extreme options, where China can end up next:

– Either China tightens its line even more or it relaxes the restrictions considerably.

However, slacking off due to poor vaccination coverage can have serious consequences, Paltemaa states.

– It will probably lead to a public health disaster.
