On Saturday night revealed The evening paper that the EU Commission plans to shock the price of snus, according to a leaked proposal that the newspaper has seen.
The document proposes a new excise tax on tobacco that could raise the price of a box of loose snus to SEK 120, an increase of just over SEK 60. The price of a can of portioned snus can increase by SEK 34.
On Sunday, reactions came from several quarters. First, Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) took to Twitter, where she described the proposal as “unreasonable” and promised to “continue to stand up for Swedish snus”.
Then the author, crime magnate and great snuffer Leif GW Persson took over. In a first comment on the proposed shock increase, he reacted by jokingly saying that “it will bring down the government” and added that he will start hoarding boxes and logs and “buy a huge stockpile”.
