Peter Forsberg is one of our country’s greatest sports stars of all time, while many claim that he is Sweden’s best ice hockey player of all time.
But he hasn’t always enjoyed the limelight.
– I didn’t know what to do, says “Foppa” in SVT.
Peter Forsberg broke through early, when he made his debut for Modo in the Hockeyallsvenskan as a 16-year-old. The big breakthrough came the following season, when “Foppa” accounted for 27 points in 39 games in the then Elitserien. It was a season where he also took the opportunity to win the relegation league with his 78 minutes in the booth.
Life in the spotlight
In the 1993/1994 season, he led Modo to the SC final, before the team moved across the Atlantic and to the NHL. The rest is – as they say – history. There were two Stanley Cup titles for Forsberg, who also received the “Art Ross Memorial Trophy” (the award for the player who scored the most points during the regular season) in 2003. In the same year, he also received the “Hart Memorial Trophy”, which went to the player who was most valuable to his team during the season.

But despite all the success and all the big headlines, Peter Forsberg has not always appreciated a life in the spotlight that his hockey career has given him. At first it was rather the opposite.

“Didn’t know what to do”
In his youth, it was a shy and nervous – almost ashamed – Forsberg who took a place in the Ångermanland team in the TV puck. In the program “Mästarnas Mästare” on SVT, he talks about the feelings he had before acting in front of the camera.
– I looked as scared as you can in front of a TV camera, I didn’t know what to do. That was the reverse side of the coin. I didn’t do hockey to end up on TV, it was because I loved being on the court, he says in the program.

Forsberg also believes that he should have received support earlier to remedy the problem with his nervousness and fear, which he almost describes as stage fright.
– If I look back, you would have been helped to get hold of that a little earlier than you would have been forced in front of the TV camera to learn.
