Sweden may have to raise the tax on snus significantly if a new proposal from the EU is hammered through, according to a leaked document that Aftonbladet has seen.
According to the proposal for a new excise tax on tobacco, the price of a box of loose snus would increase from just over SEK 60 to over SEK 120. A can of portioned snus would increase by around SEK 34.
The European Commission will make a decision on the proposal at the beginning of December and then the EU member states will agree, Aftonbladet reports.
Negotiations on the directive will take place during the Swedish presidency in the spring of 2023.
