The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the coming winter could mean another life-threatening situation for many Ukrainians due to the ongoing Russian invasion war.

– This winter may be about survival, warns Hans Kluge who is regional WHO director, during a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Half of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is either damaged or destroyed and ten million residents are without electricity, says Kluge according to the BBC.

Winter temperatures of up to minus 20 degrees are expected in Ukraine.

Kluger further says that several hundred hospitals and healthcare facilities in Ukraine can no longer operate fully, as there is a shortage of water, electricity and fuel.

Delivery wards need incubators, blood banks need refrigerators and intensive care beds need ventilators, says Kluge, adding that “everything needs electricity”.

Up to three million people may flee their homes in search of warmth and safety, says the WHO.
