During the night to Monday, thunder and lightning came over Stockholm in connection with large amounts of snow falling during the night.
According to Petter Lind, meteorologist at SMHI, this is about ordinary lightning but that it happens during winter and in the middle of a snowy weather. Snow means that it can be perceived a little differently.
– Right now, out by the Baltic Sea, we have strong villages with rain and snow. During heavy snowfalls, discharges can occur in winter, although it is more common during the summer season, he says.
In addition to Stockholm, SMHI has recorded snow flashes that passed over northern Gotland.
Although this is a normal – albeit unusual – weather phenomenon, this phenomenon is sometimes called thunder snow, according to the newspaper The Express. Thunderstorms can occur when “lightning and thunder mix with a heavy snowstorm, which in turn can cause loud thunder.”
