The new MMO Crimson Desert was announced in 2019 as the successor to Black Desert. It was originally scheduled for release in 2021 but has been postponed indefinitely. Now the developers revealed that the release should take place in the second half of 2023. It is currently unclear whether it will only appear in Korea or directly worldwide.
What exactly is this game? Crimson Desert will be a mixture of single player game and MMORPG. You slip into the role of Macduff (title picture) and his mercenaries who are supposed to introduce you to the story of the world. The focus is on fighting, exploring and solving puzzles.
After the solo campaign, you will be able to create your own character and experience multiplayer content, including:
Visually, Macduff is reminiscent of John Snow and otherwise the game has some parallels to Game of Thrones, which were deliberately chosen to appeal to western audiences.
So the game is dark and bloody. In the gameplay trailer you can also see some places that clearly indicate betrayal and intrigue. There is also talk of intrigues in the lore texts – the contrast between “wild north” and “chic south” is taken up.

Pearl Abyss wants to release Crimson Desert in 2023, without big announcement
What do the developers say about the release? Pearl Abyss, the company behind Black Desert and also Crimson Desert, presented the latest quarterly figures a few days ago. In the associated conference call, upcoming games were also discussed:
What makes us skeptical? While Crimson Desert is slated for release in 2023, Pearl Abyss missed an important moment to draw attention to it. G-Star, the largest gaming fair in Korea, is currently underway.
There was about new information about the game content of Throne and Liberty and a first trailer for the new sandbox MMORPG ArcheAge 2. But Pearl Abyss presented no trailer and no new information about Crimson Desert at the fair.
The release date was only mentioned as part of the call. There was also a curious moment when a presentation of Pearl Abyss a few days before the fair used old assets from Crimson Desert that still had the word “MMORPG” on them. This caused discussions on reddit because Pearl Abyss only describes the game itself as a multiplayer open-world action-adventure.
What do you think of Crimson Desert? Do you like the look and the concept? Or do you absolutely need a full-fledged MMORPG? Feel free to write it in the comments.
