(Tiper Stock Exchange) – Prysmian Groupworld leader in the sector of cable systems for energy and telecommunications, has been awarded a contract worth around 150 million euros assigned by the Greek manager of the transmission systems (TSO) IPTO – Independent Power Transmission Operator – to connect the islands of Milos, Folegandros and Santorini.
The contract will be finalized by 2022, following the usual approvals by the authorities involved.
This connection – explains a note – is part of Phase D of the electricity interconnection of the Cyclades, aimed at completing the complex project to integrate the electricity grid of the islands (Serifos, Milos, Folegandros and Santorini) with that of mainland Greece, with positive effects both for the islands and for the national economy as a whole. The global project includes two submarine connections: the first will connect Lavrio, a city in the Greek hinterland near Athens, to the island of Milos, passing through Serifos, while the second
link assigned to Prysmian will connect Milos to Santorini through Folegandros.
Prysmian will handle the design, supply, installation and testing of a “turnkey” system in three-pole 150 kV high voltage alternating current cable (HVAC – High Voltage Alternating Current) with XLPE insulation, which will cover a submarine section of over 100 km and a land section of approximately 10 km. Submarine and land cables will be built at qualified Prysmian factories and offshore installation activities will be carried out by one of Prysmian Group’s state-of-the-art cable laying vessels. Delivery and testing of the cables is scheduled for 2025.
The multi-phase Cyclades interconnection project will allow the islands to replace local power plants, which are struggling to cope with peak demand, with energy generated by more efficient and less polluting power plants operating in the Greek hinterland. This will help reduce CO2 emissions by phasing out obsolete fossil fuel power plants. It is also expected that, through the new link, the project will be able to push the islands to produce solar and wind energy to be transmitted inland.
