The agreement on a climate fund is welcomed. But otherwise, the Swedish side is not particularly satisfied with the outcome of the two-week climate meeting.

– I think we would have liked to see a better result, of course, says Sweden’s chief negotiator Mattias Frumerie to TT.

That during the meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh they succeeded in agreeing on a fund for damages and losses where richer countries have to pay poorer countries for damages caused by climate change is welcome, says Mattias Frumerie.

However, the EU, but also the US, have been hesitant about a new fund.

– I think it was welcome that we, from the EU’s side, could take that step and meet the developing countries in something that many had requested, says Sweden’s chief negotiator Mattias Frumerie.

“Sharper writing”

However, it is unclear exactly what this fund will look like, how much money it will contain and who will get to share in the money. According to Frumerie, the agreement regarding the fund is not the most optimal solution:

– But now the decision has come, and then we must of course contribute from the Swedish and EU side so that there is as good a result as possible, says Frumerie.

He left the meeting before a final document had been hammered out, but says that Sweden above all would have liked to see sharper writing regarding the emission reductions.

Not happy

– What we saw from the EU’s side before I left was that the content of that agreement could have been much better, he says from the airport in Istanbul on Sunday morning.

– As far as this work program is concerned, we would have liked to see a stronger platform to drive the global work.

TT: So from the Swedish side we are not very happy with the outcome?

– No, I think we would have liked to see a better result, of course.
