US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he has appointed a special expert for the “confidential documents” and “January 6 Congressional raid” investigations conducted against former US President Donald Trump.
At a press conference, Garland stated that Jack Smith, the former chief prosecutor of the special court in The Hague investigating war crimes in Kosovo, has been appointed as the special authorized expert for the Justice Department’s investigations into Trump.
Stating that Trump’s announcement of his candidacy for the presidency for the 2024 elections is the most important factor in his decision to appoint a special authority expert, Garland said that the appointment in question will contribute to the prosecution of prosecutors who continue their investigations in accordance with the law.
The special-authorized expert combined an investigation into whether “any person or entity unlawfully interfered with the delegation of authority following the 2020 presidential election,” in the framework of the January 6 Congressional raid, with an investigation into classified documents seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, as well as an investigation into the Attorney General’s. He’ll reportedly report to Garland.
No information was shared about when Smith, the special authorized expert, would prepare and present the report in question.
After the events of the congress raid on January 6, 2021, the special committee formed in the House of Representatives started an investigation on whether former President Trump was involved in the events, while Trump’s home in Florida was sent by FBI agents on the morning of August 8 to investigate “confidential documents”. had been pressed.
While Trump described the ongoing investigations against him as “political”, he specifically requested that documents taken from Mar-a-lago be reviewed by “an independent arbitrator or a special judge”.
While the investigations against him were continuing, Trump announced on the night of November 15 that he was running again for the 2024 US Presidential election at his Mar-a-Lago mansion. (AA)
