During the spring, the first part of the 20-mile-long fence against the Russian border will be built, the Finnish Border Guard Authority announces.

In its fourth supplementary budget for 2022, the Finnish government has proposed funding of six million euros, equivalent to SEK 66 million, for a three-kilometer fence at Imatra in the province of South Karelia. The first section serves as a pilot project in the construction.

In the budget bill for next year, it has been proposed to set aside 139 million euros to build an additional 70 kilometers of fencing over the next two years, the majority in southeastern Finland.

The fence will be three meters high and as the border with Russia is 130 miles long, they will not build along the entire length, but only at selected locations.

“The fence has a revealing, delaying, controlling and hindering effect,” says project manager Ismo Kurki to the authority’s website.

The decision about the fence became clear last summer, when the Finnish Parliament passed a law that made the construction possible.
