An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 has shaken western Indonesia, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced.
The earthquake occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. Swedish time) out at sea at a shallow depth just over 200 kilometers southwest of the coastal city of Bengkulu on the island of Sumatra.
According to the intergovernmental tsunami warning organization IOTWMS in India, there is a risk that the earthquake could create a tsunami, according to “historical data and tsunami modelling”.
However, the organization’s office in Indonesia has not flagged a tsunami warning.
Indonesia is regularly hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its location on the so-called Ring of Fire, an area around the Pacific Ocean with high seismic and volcanic activity.
