Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 82, is stepping down as Democratic leader. She announced this in Congress on Thursday evening.
– For me, the time has come to let a new generation lead the group that I have so deeply respected, she said.
Pelosi has been the face of the Democrats in the House of Representatives for 19 years and has had a central role in legislative work under Barack Obama and under current President Joe Biden. However, Pelosi will remain a member of Congress.
