A fire in a residential building north of Gaza City has claimed the lives of at least 20 people, according to a hospital director in Jabalia. An unspecified number of people are injured.
The Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the enclave blocked by Israel, announces that the cause of the fire is unknown.
According to Hussein al-Shaykh, corresponding interior minister in the Palestinian Authority, Israel has been asked to open the border crossing at Erez for the medical evacuation of the most seriously injured.
