Will Smith wages war on slavery and brutality in Emancipation
In addition to the first major battle scenes of the film, there is also more of Smith’s acting to see. And that is indeed impressive. The suffering, the defiance and the will to fight of his character seem to almost jump out of the pictures.
Emancipation is based on true events. During the American Civil War, a slave in Louisiana managed to escape to join the Union Army. Pictures of his back being whipped went around the world in 1863 and gave it the name “Whipping Peter‘ although his real name was Gordon.
