A request for the inclusion of the right to abortion in the Constitution will go to committee in the National Assembly. An initiative of the deputy Aurore Bergé, leader of the Renaissance group in the assembly, the party of Emmanuel Macron.
The subject has been brewing for the past few months. While in the United States, the questioning of the Roe vs. Wade law which protected abortion for American women upset the country last June, in France, activists for the right to abortion plead for it is enshrined in the Constitution.
“The national and especially international context poses an increasingly worrying threat to the right to abortion and requires this additional protection“said Aurore Bergé, leader of the Renaissance group, the party of the President of the Republic, at the origin of this bill.
A request to the National Assembly
This step back shocked Europe. In Poland too, access to abortion has been severely restricted for women recently. In any case, these are the arguments of those who wish to see the right to abortion enshrined in the Constitution. But in the other camp, reluctance remains. This is the case with the Republicans and the National Rally. For MP RN Pascale Bornes, “the right to abortion is absolutely not threatened in France“.

Proposal in fifteen days
After having validated this proposed constitutional law, there is still a long way to go. The text must be examined and validated by the hemicycle, debate scheduled for the week of November 28. To strengthen the chances of passing a law on the subject, the deputy Mathilde Panot of La France Insoumise (LFI) will also propose another text on November 24. To be continued, therefore.
