“It was a huge battle,” Pieterse recalls. “We kept on attacking each other, but nobody managed to get away. My plan was to go full throttle on the climb on the last lap. It didn’t work there either. Later I had a small lead. But when Shirin joined again , I knew it would come down to a sprint.”
