The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been criticized for often replacing emotional depth with pure story structures. So will the story moves forward, but the characters lag behind. A recently popular example is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And its leading actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, apparently sees it the same way.
Benedit Cumberbatch lacks emotion on the Marvel silver screen
He told The Talks:
With a movie like The Avengers, it can be hard to get the single emotional moment right. They only have 5 minutes for it, because of the larger things around it. […] There is hardly any character development. It’s about serving the story.
Cumberbatch is, of course, primarily talking about the mechanics of acting in the MCU. But many Marvel fans will be drawn to recent blockbusters like Doctor Strange 2 or Thor 4: Love and Thunder have thought the same. An epic story is told here, in which the characters are less more than cold bricks.
That’s what happened to many with one of the loveliest MCU scenes in Doctor Strange 2. Here, characters with immense backstories were created in a matter of seconds burned to create a dramaturgical climax. However, it seems rather questionable whether Marvel Studios will heed the criticism of many fans for the future of the multiverse storyline.
