    Faced with the dangerous winter viruses, the Academy of Medicine pleads for a return to wearing a mask “in closed public spaces”. Is it really useful? Update with Dr Gérald Kierzek, emergency doctor and medical director of Doctissimo.

    We thought he was gone for good, but the reality is quite different. In a press release published this Wednesday, November 2, the institution recommends the wearing of the FFP2 mask “in closed spaces open to the publicc” and pleads for a “rehabilitation of barrier measures“, neglected since last summer.

    The mask is recommended in certain situations

    As the eighth wave of Covid-19 stabilizes”at a high level“, than a “early seasonal flu epidemic becomes clearer in mainland France” and “bronchiolitis in children under 2 years of age has moved into the epidemic phase“, the National Academy of Medicine is campaigning for the return of the mask and the “rehabilitation of barrier measures“.

    This winter, the institution indeed fears an increase in cases of co-infection (flu and Covid-19), “exposing vulnerable people to the most severe forms and hospital services at the risk of saturation“.

    To limit the number of infections, the National Academy of Medicine recommends:

    • Wearing an FFP2 type mask in enclosed public spaces for frail and elderly people (people with comorbidities, health professionals, pregnant women – already vaccinated, etc.);
    • Wearing a surgical-type mask in hospitals, dispensaries, health centers and pharmacies, and in closed spaces open to the public, such as public transport during rush hours;
    • The systematic use of hydroalcoholic gel in public places.

    The Academy specifies, however, that the health situation on French territory does not justify a return “to mandatory measures”.

    The mask protects against all forms of viruses

    For Dr. Kierzek, these recommendations reveal common sense.

    Fragile people should make sure to wear a mask. Ditto, when you are sick, you should wear one outside and at home. These are rules of good practice, which reduce the risk of epidemics and protect the population from viruses of all kinds: Covid, flu, gastro…
