The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has lifted the suspension imposed on Stade d’Olembé and authorized a semi-final and the final to be played there, CAF announced on January 30. Eight people were killed in a crowd movement on January 24, on the sidelines of the Cameroon-Comoros round of 16.
A semi-final and the final of the 33rd African Cup of Nations football (CAN 2022) will take place at the Stade d’Olembé, as was planned before the start of this CAN 2022. So decided by the Confederation African football (CAF), this January 30, despite a movement of crowds which had left eight dead and dozens injured, on January 24, on the sidelines of the eighth final Cameroon-Comoros.
” The Organizing Committee of CAF has decided unanimously to lift the suspension imposed on Stade d’Olembé and to authorize one of the semi-finals of the [CAN 2022] as well as the final match to be held at the Stade d’Olembé “, informs a press release.
“The safety and security of spectators and visitors will be ensured”
CAF says it has received a detailed report on the tragedy that happened a week ago. Its Organizing Committee has took note of the Government’s recommendations and commitments regarding additional security measures in addition to those already successfully implemented at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium during the Morocco-Malawi match and at the Japoma stadium during the Gambia-Cameroon match “.
The governing body of African football concludes that ” CAF, the Local Organizing Committee and the Government of Cameroon having considerably reinforced security and resources at the Olembé Stadium, [ils] are confident that the safety and security of spectators and visitors will be ensured “.
