Sci-fi fans can’t wait for Avatar 2: The Way of Water to hit theaters. It is difficult to predict whether James Cameron’s mammoth work will live up to expectations and perhaps even achieve the success of its predecessor. Therefore, should the film flop, the director has a contingency plan in place. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 will then have to believe it.
James Cameron wants to skip parts 4 and 5 on Avatar 2 flop
Slashfilm quotes him from an issue of Total Film:
Maybe the market is telling us that [zum Avatar 2-Kinostart] in three months it will all be over. Or half done [und wir dann sagen müssen:] “Ok, let’s end the story in part 3”, when there is simply no profit. The Pandemic and the Streaming Market [könnten zu dieser Überlegung führen]. But maybe we also remind viewers of the importance of cinema. The question is: how many people care?
Cameron’s concerns are not entirely unfounded. Just had big blockbusters within the last two years heavy pandemic losses to be expected. In contrast, the streaming market is more aggressive than ever. On the other hand, even under adverse circumstances, Spider-Man: No Way Home has become the highest-grossing film about its Marvel hero.
When are the Avatar series sci-fi blockbusters coming?
Avatar 2 will be released on December 14, 2022 come to the cinema. Avatar 3 is scheduled for release on December 18, 2024. Hopefully, in late 2026 and 2028, Avatar 4 and 5 will be released.
