Rafael Nadal made tennis history on January 30, 2022 in Melbourne by becoming the first player to win a 21st Grand Slam victory. The 35-year-old Spaniard beat Russian Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
The Swiss Roger Federer and the Serbian Novak Djokovic dreamed of it but it was Rafael Nadal who did it: on January 30, 2022 in Melbourne, the 35-year-old Spaniard became the first player in history to win a 21st title in Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and US Open).
Nadal won the Australian Open final 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 over Daniil Medvedev after more than 5 hours of fighting. The Russian manhandled him during the first two rounds, before the trend was reversed.
With 21 major tournaments won (2 Australian Open, 13 Roland-Garros, 2 Wimbledon, 4 US Open), the Iberian is now one unit ahead of Federer and Djokovic, his two great rivals. Enough to revive the debate on the status of the best tennis player of all time.
