Finland has won its eighth consecutive world championship in Espoo. Pasi Katajan coached by Finland defeated Canada in the two-part final. The countries went directly to the finals.
The world championship is Finland’s tenth overall.
Finland won the second final match played on Sunday evening with a crushing score of 13–3 (4–0, 2–1, 1–1, 6–1). In the first final on Friday, Finland also won clearly, 8–2.
Finland’s first goal did not have to wait long, when Anne Pohjola put the ring in the goal after just over a minute of play Susanna Tapani and Roosa Salonen acting as pitchers of the hit.
After the opening goal, Canada briefly took control of the game, but the goalkeeper Maria Perkkola managed to keep a clean sheet. The home team, on the other hand, used the opportunities they created clinically, scoring three more goals in the opening set. Tapani, Salonen and Maija Väyrynen.
Canada also got on the scoreboard in the second period when Jenny Snowdon missed Perkkola with his shot. Both teams succeeded once in an even third set.
In the last set, Finland played at Canada’s expense and scored six goals. Snowdon’s 3–13 reduction remained a thin consolation as Finland pushed irresistibly to the world championship.
Tapani, also known as an ice hockey player, scored no less than five goals and a total of ten power points (5+5) in the match. Väyrynen scored three goals.
Pohjola, which already won its seventh world championship, scored two goals in the final and scored a powerful 2+6=8, even though in the third period he had to leave the ice after injuring his leg in a tackle by a Canadian player. Salonen also had a two-goal night.
Only half a year ago underwent brain surgery Katariina Kurikko scored an 11–2 hit, when Finland scored no fewer than six goals in the last period.
– If we go back half a year, this was a pretty distant imagination. I can’t believe I get to be here. It’s tempting to be humble. I am grateful, says Kurikko.
The world championship is Kurikko’s fourth in his career.
– Now the jacket is empty. An incredible feeling. There is an incredible atmosphere here and we have an incredible gang. Now let’s just enjoy.
Susanna Tapani was chosen as the most valuable player of the World Cup. He scored a total of eight goals in two matches.
– It’s a great award. Any of us could have been chosen. What kind of places come up all the time, you can’t help but enjoy it and hit the finish line, Tapani beamed.
– An incredible and at the same time empty feeling. When you can celebrate the championship at the end of a long project in front of the home crowd, this is absolutely amazing.
The prestigious championships were Tapani’s second during the current year, as he was with the Women’s Lions at the World Hockey Championships in August. Finland finished sixth at the time, so the gold medal from the ringette competition is a more than welcome addition to the 29-year-old racketeer’s trophy cabinet.
– Let’s say this way, it is more comfortable to continue the season. The 2019 World Ice Hockey Championship won silver here in Espoo. Now I have fond memories of this hall as well.
– I don’t know where we will continue to celebrate the championship from here. Surely a good party is coming, because we are the best in the world at that too, Tapani laughed.
