The stalemate continues in the elections in Italy! It happened before in 1971

The stalemate continues in the elections in Italy It happened

The impasse in the presidential elections in Italy continues. While the elections, which started on January 24, continue, the 7th round of voting, held today, did not yield any results. Due to the fact that the current President Sergio Mattarella received the most votes in this round and no consensus could be reached on another candidate, the 6 parties that formed the coalition government demanded that Mattarella take charge in the second term. Matarella received 125 votes last Wednesday and 387 votes in today’s vote.

HE WANTED SACRIFICE FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY

In the news in the Italian press, it was stated that the leader of the far-right League Party, Matteo Salvini, asked Mattarella to “make a sacrifice” for the good of the country, while Prime Minister Mario Draghi called Mattarella and asked him to continue his duty. While Mattarella does not take kindly to the second term, he is expected to accept the post for the continuation of political stability. Experts have suggested that after Mattarella accepts a second term, he will step down when the political situation allows.

ONLY ONE PERSON HAS WORKED FOR TWO TERMS

Among previous presidents, only 11th President Giorgio Napolitano had served two terms. Completing his 7-year term of office in 2013, Napolitano accepted the task upon the consensus of all political centers in the conditions of the political and economic crisis in the country and was elected president for the second time. Napolitano resigned from his post two years later after a new government was formed.

AFTER TURN 4, ELECTION CONDITION WAS WITHDRAWAL FROM 2 IN 3 MAJORITIES

For Italy’s 13th president to be elected, one of the candidates must receive at least 505 votes of the 1,99 electoral delegates. Due to the fact that President Mattarella’s term of office will end on February 3, the election condition was reduced from a 2/3 majority to an absolute majority as of the 4th round, after the first 3 rounds of the elections that started on 24 January did not yield any results.

THE ELECTION IN 1971 WAS THE LONGEST LASTING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

On the other hand, in the longest-running presidential election in Italy in 1971, Giovanni Leone won the election after 23 rounds. (UAV)
