– The society we live in today is very visually focused – but radio has a charm, it has a soul in it, says editor-in-chief Daniel Solvold.
The station has gone through many changes since the early eighties; name changes, internal disputes and in 2014 they stopped broadcasting on the FM band as it was too expensive. The station is now available via webcasts and in podcast format.
– Radio AF started as a way to break the radio monopoly, it was quite rebellious from the very beginning. Then I would say that we have tightened up a bit recently – it has become a bit more tidy but with that said, we still have fun.
Successful nursery
When students get involved in radio, they first have to go through basic training where they learn the technology and try broadcasting before they can then get their own program.
It’s a concept that has proven to work well as a nursery for future media personalities. Among the alumni are comedian Jesper Rönndahl, Kakan Hermansson, DN journalist Björn Af Kleen and Sydsvenskan’s former head of culture Rakel Chukri.
– It is a good bridge between student life and professional life, says Daniel Solvold.
Frida Bergström and Wilma Pihl have their own program called “Bitterfnitter”, where they talk about things that bother them. They have various entry points into radio as a potential springboard for a future media career.
– That’s not why I’m here, says Frida Bergström.
– I would say that it is an attractive force for me, says Wilma Pihl.
