– They (the bomb technicians) have made it so that it is harmless from an explosive point of view, says police spokesperson Johnny Gustavsson.
It is unclear what kind of object it was, but the police also found weapons in the car.
– We keep the more intimate details to ourselves, says Gustavsson.
The object was discovered in connection with the police checking a vehicle in the area at around 8.30pm on Thursday.
– The driver of the car obviously discovered it, who turned off the street and we lost it for a little while. Soon after, the patrol saw the car, but then it stood abandoned in the middle of the street.
Eyewitnesses saw people leaving the car. The police found the suspected dangerous object when they examined the car.
The incident is being investigated as a serious crime against the Act on Flammable and Explosive Substances and serious weapons offences.
Initially, the police cordoned off an area of 100 meters around the car and nearby houses had to be evacuated. Strängnäs municipality urged residents to gather at a nearby sports ground, where there was crisis support.
Shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday evening, the bomb technicians were ready at the scene and were able to leave room for forensics technicians to examine the car more closely. In doing so, the police also reduced the extent of the cordon and residents could return.
A bus line that runs on the street where the car is parked has adapted its route for safety reasons.
