Plants that we grow with today both in Sweden and in other countries in Europe cannot handle high temperatures for a long time. In France alone, heat and drought have made a clear impression on agriculture, among other things, potato and maize production has been hit hard by water shortages.
One solution that researchers are developing is to adapt crops to a warmer and drier climate. The method involves crossing plants with other, more resistant varieties to create hybrids that are more resistant to drought.
– It is absolutely decisive. If we don’t keep up and develop these new varieties that can withstand the climate, we will have a huge problem with food production, says Hammenhag.
