Netflix with ads, who would have thought? Until recently, advertising-free streaming services and the classic advertising block cascades of German private broadcasters were diametrically opposed. After Amazon recently launched a free offer with advertising, the Netflix model is following suit today. But is the new advertising tariff really much cheaper?

Here you will find the most important information at a glance:

  • Price: The new basic subscription with advertising costs €4.99. It is three euros cheaper than the previous basic tariff of €7.99. With regard to the individual user, it is also cheaper than the standard subscription at €12.99. Only in the premium segment for €17.99 does each of the four possible users pay less for their own access.
  • Advertising: According to the Netflix site, there should be about four minutes of advertising for every hour of a film or series. Expect 12-15 spots of 15-30 seconds each.
  • Movies: The assortment is limited with the basic subscription with advertising. According to Netflix, licensing agreements are to blame. There is no list of missing content outside of the subscription, DWDL expects restrictions of 5-10 percent of the offer
  • Quality, devices and downloads: Movies and series are available in 720p and can only be watched on one device. The downloads are not possible in the basic subscription with advertising.
