For years there has been controversy over the fact that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will take place in Qatar and that in November and December. From EA there is no critical word about the hype trailer for the new World Cup mode in FIFA 23. On the contrary, people are happy that the World Cup will take place in November, which opens up new opportunities to earn money in FUT. That’s cynical, believes MeinMMO author Schuhmann.
Why do so many have a problem with the 2022 World Cup? There are two criticisms: the venue and the timing.
This is the problem with the venue: The World Cup takes place in Qatar. For years, press representatives, politicians, human rights organizations and even individual football officials and teams have been criticizing the stadiums being built under poor conditions by foreign workers. One speaks of slave labor:
Allegations have been circulating for years that the World Cup was only awarded to Qatar because votes were bought by FIFA officials. Qatar is doing “sports washing”, wants to polish its image with a pompous and expensive festival and at the same time cover up the criticism of the conditions there.
In addition, the human rights situation in Qatar is criticized and that football doesn’t really play a role there.
After watching the new FIFA 23 trailer, do you know which country the World Cup will be in?
What’s the problem with timing? Normally, the World Cup is held every 4 years in the summer, but that is not possible in Qatar because it is simply too hot to play football there in the summer.
Therefore, the World Cup will be played from November 20th to December 18th: This is strange for many in Europe, because a “World Cup in winter” lacks the summery World Cup atmosphere. Traditionally, the World Cup is watched by many in the garden while having a barbecue, or at public viewings outdoors – none of this will happen when snow is falling outside, people are eating gingerbread and drinking mulled wine.
In addition, a World Cup in December messes up the entire planning of the football year around it: the Bundesliga is suspended for 10 weeks. Each team will play 14 games in 2022 and then the remaining 20 in 2023.
There are also objections from environmentalists: it is grotesque that the World Cup is being held in “air-conditioned stadiums” in times of climate change, in the middle of the desert.

World Cup timing gives FIFA 23 a ‘unique opportunity’
How does FIFA 23 see it in their trailer? The FIFA 23 trailer sounds cynical: In the trailer, the speakers, a community manager and a producer, are happy about the unique opportunity that the World Cup will take place in November.
Another thing that I know the community will be happy about is because this Worlds is happening in November and December […] The timing of this World Cup allows us to create a unique experience for FUT. It will be a full season of daily content.
EA promises:
The World Cup mode can now be combined with the FUT team that players build anyway.
EA doesn’t mention Qatar in the trailer – Uses generic phrases
For the atmosphere at the World Cup, the trailer brings some generic sentences and images that would actually fit any World Cup, but not this one:
The word “Qatar” is not used once in the trailer – only on the trophy and the banners can it be seen, it is never spoken. There is always talk of “biggest tournament” or “this World Cup” – it seems as if the World Cup is taking place in Mexico or South America.
EA’s microtransactions in FIFA 23 in FUT mode have been viewed very critically for some time.
The FIFA 23 World Cup update will be available on November 9th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
There is also some criticism of the mode in terms of gameplay. So there are hardly any new stadiums, only 2 should be in the game:
FIFA 23 disappoints fans so much with the new World Cup mode that they want the 2014 version back
