CARANTEC. A family was discovered dead on Sunday in Carantec (Finistère). The investigation seems to be moving towards poisoning. What we know.
[Mise à jour le 31 octobre à 12h55] The emotion is strong this Monday, October 31, 2022 in Carantec (Finistère), the day after a macabre discovery in a house. On Sunday, an entire family was found dead at their home: the hanged father, the mother and the two children in their beds. In this village of 3000 inhabitants, located on the edge of the Channel, 13km from Morlaix, there is misunderstanding after the announcement of the tragedy. “They were great people, nice, nothing to say. They had bought another piece of land next door and then they seemed to be well established here. There is no indication that someone was going to commit such a barbaric act. It’s a shock”, comments a neighbor to RMC. The investigation, opened for intentional homicides, has only just begun. The autopsies could make it possible to learn more about the unfolding of the facts. Suspicions of poisoning emerged, while the family context became tense.
What do we know about the death of four people in Carantec?
Terrible drama in Brittany this Sunday, October 30. A family of four was found dead in a house in Carantec, in northern Finistère. According to information from Telegram, a father was found hanged on the ground floor. His wife and their two daughters, aged 8 and 11, were unconscious in their beds. The family dog was also found dead.
The mother of the companion alerted the gendarmes on Sunday, October 30, not having heard from her daughter since the day before. The firefighters and the gendarmes therefore went to the family’s house, discovering the bodies of the family. The public prosecutor of Brest indicated that the first elements of the investigation of this chilling discovery “did not reveal any trace of external injury, nor of the use of a weapon on any of the bodies”.
The track of a poisoning linked to a separation
According to information from the Breton daily Telegram, the thesis of poisoning is favored by the gendarmes for the death of the mother and her two daughters, “due to traces of vomiting observed in the girls’ bed”. This hypothesis is also supported by the fact that when the gendarmes arrived on the spot the family’s house “showed no apparent disorder” said the Brest prosecutor’s office.
Also according to the daily, the couple had been married since June 2009, but seemed to be going through a period of crisis. Indeed, the press release from the Brest prosecutor’s office clarified that this drama seemed to take place in a context of the couple’s separation. An investigation for intentional homicides was entrusted to the gendarmerie to determine the circumstances surrounding these deaths.
