By 10pm on Saturday night, around 100,000 people had gathered in the Itaewon entertainment district in Seoul for Halloween celebrations. The first big Halloween celebration since the corona pandemic and the first since the covid restrictions were lifted.

Exactly what happens next is unclear, but panic breaks out in the streets and people get stuck in one of the narrow alleys. Survivors describe the crowding as terrible and that it was impossible to move.

At least 153 people have died. The number of reported injured varies between 80-150, most are said to be in their 20s. 2,000 people are still missing. Local authorities fear the death toll will rise. People are said to have died from lack of oxygen, but many are also said to have been trampled or crushed to death.
