A tiny village in Spain is striving for complete energy self-sufficiency with the help of solar panels.

Ballesteros de Calatrava, with a population of around 400 in central Spain, is fighting the energy shortage and climate change in its own way.

The first panels were installed by the mayor Juan Carlos Moraleda in 2020 on the roof of the town hall. When Moraleda noticed their benefits, he decided to expand the project to other parts of the village.

At the moment, the village’s 200 solar panels currently generate electricity for 25 families, but later all residents are planned to be connected to the system.

– We pay according to consumption. My old electricity contract cost 150 euros per month, but this month I paid around 70-75 euros, says Pilara resident of the village.
