Ant-Man 3 looks like a sci-fi movie for kids – but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing

Ant Man 3 looks like a sci fi movie for kids

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is important to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a number of ways. The film isn’t just the start of Phase 5. The sequel also brings the new Thanos to the screen: Kan the Conqueror. So far, the villain has only appeared in the Loki series on Disney+. There isn’t much of a hint of his weighty arrival in the Ant-Man 3 trailer, however.

Instead, following epic superhero tale that once again takes the Pushing the limits of the MCU, Quantumania looks like a cozy Spy Kids movie in the first trailer. Still, there’s reason to be excited for the return of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and company – and it has to do with Thor: Love and Thunder and Star Wars, of all things.

Ant-Man 3 is like the Marvel version of a Spy Kid movie –
and threatens to become the next Thor 4

The first moving images from Ant-Man 3 are more reminiscent of Robert Rodriguez’s deliberately over-the-top family films than of the cinematic introduction to a new MCU age that forms the middle part of the Multiverse saga. The trailer also evokes spooky memories of Thor 4. No wonder, after all, both Marvel blockbusters were shot in the same studio environment, the so-called volumes.

Where complex backgrounds used to be added later with the computer, they can now be done in Volume thanks huge LED walls be displayed directly during the shoot. Used correctly, volume technology can provide a blockbuster like The Batman with breathtaking images and eternal sunsets, as cinematographer Greig Fraser breaks down in the Hollywood Reporter.

In Love and Thunder, however, the result is extremely poor. The latest Thor adventure swaps superhero bombast for aimless-looking slapstick that terribly staged became. There is no feeling for colors, spaces and movements. The film looks absolutely awful. At first glance, Ant-Man 3 seems to fall into the same trap and doesn’t bode well.

Ant-Man 3 can still be an awesome Marvel movie because it has a secret weapon

Like Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Love and Thunder, Reed got his first volume experience in the Star Wars universe. Both filmmakers have directed episodes of The Mandalorian, the series that made great by technology. Here it is already obvious who can handle the volume better.

Whether it’s alien horror set in a deep icy cavern with a giant spider or the return of Luke Skywalker navigating the labyrinthine corridors of a spaceship, Reed pulls it off amazingly well artificial studio backdrop appear tangible allow. With Waititi, on the other hand, one never completely forgets that actors move in front of LED walls. Especially when he wants to explore whole universes.

As an exciting space adventure, Thor: Love and Thunder fails completely. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman’s eyes mercilessly bounce off the volume. Peyton Reed has already proven he can handle technology real worlds can stage. So why not with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which also explores an unknown, mysterious place with the Quantum Realm?

Ant-Man 3 is the balance the MCU desperately needs

Reed and Ant-Man just the right combination to balance the ever-expanding MCU. Because both can unite, which is more likely in Marvel films happened separately: Entertaining nonsense where nothing really matters (Thor 4) and meaningful epics about saving the earth or even the entire universe/multiverse (the Avengers movies).

Reed can do both: The finale of Ant-Man not only includes nerve-racking moments like the encounter between Scott Lang and the villain Yellowjacket. In the same scene, a larger than life version of Thomas the tank engine up, which is fatal to the shrunken figures. The result is one of the best action scenes in the MCU and an intriguing play on proportions.

In Ant-Man and the Wasp, Reed skillfully moves between comedy elements and touching sincerity. This allows him to cleverly approach an ambivalent character like the tragic villain Ava Starr aka Ghost. If he kept that balance for Quantumania, we could have a great start to phase 5 expect of the MCU. Even if Ant-Man 3 looks like a kid’s movie.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania launches on February 15, 2023 in the cinema.
