Dragons, political intrigues, questionably sexually charged family constellation – what more could you wish for? House of the Dragon proved with its first season that the world still has a crush on Westeros despite the controversial Game of Thrones finale. After each new episode remained a dragon-sized hole in the heartwhich was difficult to fill until the next episode.
Luckily there is the internet and a lot of very creative people who follow it Fascination for incest, hard of hearing dragon grannies and demons “The only thing I can do in a room is drama” Targaryen (Matt Smith) let loose every week. Here’s the ultimate season 1 recap – in memes.

There’s a lot going on in Episode 1 of House of the Dragon, and the scene featured in this meme by ChaseJSuddarth combines several key aspects (and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3): Daemon is a popularly acclaimed drama queenwho can’t handle defeat, which is why Cristen Cole (Fabien Frankel) is his nemesis from that moment on.
It’s only fair to portray this situation for the ego trip it is. How should one take them seriously? After all a woman loses the very real battle against her own body in the female-dominated theater of war, childbirth, while men play war to applause.

While the season opener was mostly about getting us acquainted with the world and characters of the Game of Thrones spinoff, Episode 2 of House of the Dragon takes a running start into the bottomless puddle of drama. Daemon invents marriages, makes up pregnancies, and steals dragon eggs. And King Viserys (Paddy Considine) decides in a scene any afternoon talk show of the ’90s and early 2000s would be proud of, who will be his next queen. The most momentous decision of the entire show, perfectly captured as a meme by Twitter user TheJoeMagician:
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop laughing at how, in making the empire-changing decision of who to marry, King Viserys gathers his advisers and daughter and makes himself the center of the drama, only to announce his decision as if it were a Jerry Springer’s paternity test.House of the Dragon Episode 3: The Second of His Name

What would you do if your sexually attractive uncle has been caught in a seemingly hopeless war for years and can no longer bring you fancy necklaces, your father married your best friend and who meanwhile carries your second half-brother in her belly? That’s right, you would (have) play your sad favorite song on repeat and go somewhere where nobody would get on your nerves. Rhaenyra is the grumpy, rebellious teenager in all of us and this scene from episode 3 tweeted by kiara_rhae13 perfectly sums up the growing distance between Rhaenyra and Alicent/Viserys.
House of the Dragon Episode 4: The King of the Straits

Episode 4 of House of the Dragon caused the first real scandal – and plunged large sections of the audience into a moral dilemma. Are incestuous scenes erotic, even welcome, as long as they take place in the expanded Game of Thrones cosmos? Viserys’ answer is: Not when it concerns my daughter.
The scene where the slowly rotting king learns that Rhaenyra and Daemon have become intimate in a brothel, is unusually funny by HotD standards – and cements Viserys as the kind of ruler and head of family that everything is conspired against. As against smoking Ben Affleck, the saddest person in Hollywood, captured here as a meme by 4eyedRaven.

Finally a wedding in House of the Dragon to show us! Because as we know, only good things happen in Westeros when two people say yes. Small joke. Of course, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon’s (Theo Nate) marriage also involves blood, because Ser Criston Cole just can’t get over the fact that Rhaenyra after one sex doesn’t want to give up the throne and elope with him. Which is why he smashes the head of Laenor’s secret lover, Joffrey. Public. To then confess to Alicent that he and Rhaenyra slept together. Another rift in the relationship between the Queen and her friend/stepdaughter. And the beginning of Criston’s development into the most hated character of the whole series.

10 years later. Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) are both multiple moms and look very different because of the actress rotation. The atmosphere between the two is on the ground. Because of everything that has happened so far. But also because Rhaenyra’s children were apparently conceived out of wedlock. Because Viserys doesn’t listen to her, Alicent at least tries to pit her own children against her… nephews? (Targaryen family relationships are a bit tricky) – and catches her eldest son Aegon masturbating by the open window. A window that, probably not coincidentally, looks quite similar to the one where a scene took place in Game of Thrones, which has also been burned deep into our memories. Just different, as the tweet from 44PURPL3 proves.

Episode 7 of House of the Dragon in one picture
What follows after marriage, many births and love with oneself? Yes, a funeral. Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell), Daemon’s second wife, is buried after committing suicide by dragon fire. The event brings together the entire dysfunctional family, whose mutual dislikes escalate to the point of… Alcohol poisoning occurs, children lose their eyes, a murder is faked and, in the end, they are secretly married. Unfortunately, in the best Game of Thrones manner, you could hardly see anything of it, because the makers of House of the Dragon also seem to have a severe allergy to good lighting. So there can only be one meme that sums up this episode – a black screen.

There are countless things to say about perhaps the best episode of the entire first season of House of the Dragon. The heartbreaking farewell to Viserys. The last moments of peace within the family, before everyone really hates each other… In the end, however, one question remains above all: Why is every second person called Aegon and was the Dance of the Dragons really primarily triggered by Alicent misunderstanding her dying husband? Jake_metz’s Breaking Bad meme was probably all of us by the end of the episode. In front of the TV.

For those who haven’t figured it out yet, Episode 9 of House of the Dragon makes it clear once and for all: In our world, what happens in the dark alleys of King’s Landing only exists on the dark web. And: You shouldn’t watch this series with your parents. While several parties go in search of Aegon, who is crowned king against his will, a kind of fight club is uncovered in passing, in which orphans fight for their lives.
However, the scene that everyone was talking about afterwards was different: Alicent makes Larys Strong masturbate at the sight of her feetto get information. Which gives you a whole new title in memes like grassyferret’s: “Queen Alicent Hightower, first of her name, person who invented selling foot photos.”

OK, here’s the scene where Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) and his baby dragon are bitten to death by Vhagar against Aemond’s wishes is among the scariest things the Game of Thrones series expanded universe has ever shown us. It’s tragic, fantastically directed and sets us up for what’s about to happen in the seasons to come. But: How Twitter (in this case 0101axiahtic ) interpreted this scene and Vhagar as the oldest living dragon granny with real war experiencewho no longer really understands what is happening around her – that is real meme gold.
Too bad we have to wait two years for Season 2 of House of the Dragon.
