The best German Netflix film so far could even win

After being released in cinemas three weeks ago, the film adaptation of the novel Nothing New in the West is also arriving on Netflix. The war film is based on the literature of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, which has already been adapted twice in the form of moving images. Now director Edward Berger tells the story.

Nothing New in the West is about German soldiers fighting on the Western Front during World War I. They want to take Paris, but are stuck in the trenches. Remarques unsparing story about the hopelessness and futility of the war is still relevant more than 90 years after its publication.

Nothing new in the West at Netflix: A devastating war film is in the Oscar race

Just like in Remarque’s template, the young soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) is at the center of the hopeless events in Berger’s film adaptation. At first he completely fell for the warmongering propaganda of the German Empire. At the frontline however, no heroes await himbut only suffering and death.
