In two weeks, it will be decided which party will gain power in Washington, when Americans elect representatives to the two chambers of Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives, where the Democrats currently control both. 34 out of 100 seats in the Senate and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are at stake. In addition, state elections and a series of gubernatorial elections must be decided.
US inflation is the highest in 40 years and the eroded purchasing power of households can play a role in which party Americans vote for, which favors the Republicans, according to Stefan Åsberg.
– There is a real headwind for the Democrats, which of course depends on the economic situation in the country. The Republicans have more confidence in managing the US finances and that is what we are seeing, because there are many indications that the Republicans will take back control of the House of Representatives. However, it is much more even when it comes to the election to the senate, says Stefan Åsberg.
According to a compilation made by the newspaper Washington Post 291 Republican members of Congress are questioning the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, and many believe that this year’s midterm elections could determine the direction of the future of American democracy.
– This can lead to many Republicans now ending up in key positions in the states – as governors, ministers of justice or as the state’s speaker. This means that you can directly approve or reject an election result and it can have enormous consequences, perhaps not now in the mid-term elections, but in the upcoming presidential election in 2024 there is a risk of major contradictions, says Stefan Åsberg.
