You can witness one of the most awkward dinner parties of all time in The Invitation. Karyn Kusama’s haunting horror thriller is out one of the greatest genre films of recent years was an insider tip right at the beginning. If you don’t already know The Invitation, it’s best to change that!

That’s what The Invitation is all about

In the plot of the film, Will (Logan Marshall-Green) and his current girlfriend are invited to dinner at his ex-girlfriend’s house. The invitation came as a surprise to him, because he and his ex have each other separated because of tragedy and hardly any contact. When one of the friends reported a sect-like experience with a video, the unpleasant evening became more and more oppressive.

The Invitation is a masterful mix of suspense, tragedy and horror

The great chill of Karyn Kusama’s film lies in the constant uncertainty that lingers over the somber images of this dinner party somewhere in the dark of Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills. From minute to minute, the premonition increases that something is wrong here and one horrible surprise awaiting their unveiling.

For a long time, the director played with this oppressive mood, in which it could also be that the main character Will because of his traumatic past imagining all the unpleasant details with his ex-girlfriend.

A film like The Invitation, which is dedicated to the slow build-up of suspense, ultimately stands or falls with its resolution. And it’s in Karyn Kusama’s masterfully staged psychological horror all the harder.

Of course, we won’t reveal what happens in the finale at this point. Like The Invitation towards the end though Demons of the past and horrors of the present explode into a pure nightmare is the culmination of this gripping gem of the genre.
