Chinese President Xi Jinping has been re-elected for a third term as General Secretary of the Communist Party.
With Sunday’s re-election, the party scraps the limit of two five-year mandates that has been in place since 1982. The 69-year-old Xi thereby cements his position as China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.
With newly added allies in the inner circle – the Standing Committee – Xi Jinping is consolidating his power.
