5 simple tips to score more goals

New to FIFA 23 and looking for ways to score more goals? We look at simple tips that can help your offense.

FIFA 23 brings some gameplay changes from its predecessor. It can happen that usual processes no longer lead to the goal as consistently as they used to.

Even for new players, it can be difficult at first to break through the opponent’s defense with offense. That’s why we’ve collected a few tips here to help you score faster.

Use the 2 best shots in FIFA 23

Which shots are worth taking in FIFA 23? As things stand, two types of shots have emerged as favorites for many players.

The first is the “outer step shot”. You activate it with L2/LT and the shot button when you charge the shot over three bars.

It is best to position yourself diagonally on the sixteen in front of the goal and then send the outside shot into the far corner. You can find out more about the outside instep shot here.

The second shot is the “power shot”. This is a new feature in FIFA 23 that allows you to fire an extremely powerful shot at the opponent’s goal.

You activate the shot by simultaneously pressing L1 + R1 or LB + RB and the shot button. Then a longer animation starts in which your player charges and fires the shot.

You can see what it looks like in the video:

The shot is difficult to aim and can be blocked by the enemy while charging – so you’re taking a risk. But a well-executed power shot is almost impossible to stop from the keeper.

High pass in the barrel – to the right strikers

In FIFA 23 something has changed in gameplay. Players are no longer quite as agile as they used to be, and dribbling is currently not quite as effective. Therefore, many players prefer to rely on a good passing game.

A popular trick at the moment is the “Hohe Pass in den Lauf”. You activate it with L1/LB and the triangle/Y button. Then your player sends a pass down the path of an attacker, ideally over the defenders.

But which attackers are worthwhile as recipients? Currently, many players swear by cards with the “Lengthy” movement style. These are actually beefy, big players, but they get faster and faster when sprinting. They currently often have speed advantages over non-Lengthy players. Some also criticize the running style as overpowered.

However, the combination of “pass in the barrel” and “length” striker is very dangerous and can give you one or two goals.

Some players can also be turned into “length players” with chemistry styles. Here you will find 20 players that you can make faster with the “Lengthy” trick.

Learn good skill moves – like the heel to ball roll

Even if dribbling isn’t quite as strong this year, skill moves can give you the decisive advantage in tight situations. You can find some strong skill moves for FIFA 23 here.

In an interview with eSportsman Henning Wilmbusse, the professional recommended the “Heel to Ball Roll”: This is a new and simple trick in FIFA 23, but it is perfect for tight spaces.

  • Hold L1/LB and then flick the right stick in the direction you are walking, then in the opposite direction
  • Now your player performs a trick that fakes a heel-to-heel straight ahead, but then moves slightly to the side and can thus lead past opponents.

You can see the trick here from 0:36 in the video from EA on YouTube:

    Trick opponents with Creative Runs

Affects the routes: You can control the paths of your players to a certain extent. The simple version works like this:

  • With L1/LB you send a targeted player forward
  • With R1/RB you bring a targeted player to you
  • But there is a slightly more complex variant: the Creative Runs. It’s been around since FIFA 21, but if you’re not using it yet, it can be worth learning.

    How Creative Runs work:

  • As above, you send a targeted player with L1/LB
  • But now you patch the right stick directly in the direction in which the player should run
  • So you can specify exactly where the player should run – and you can play a pass into the run there, for example
  • The trainer can use small arrows to show you where the Creative Run is going

With Creative Runs you can send your players on unusual and unexpected runs that your opponents would not expect. In tight games, this can give you a distinct advantage – but it takes practice.

    Don’t give standards away

What are standards? Standard situations in a soccer game are free kicks and corners. You get them every now and then in FIFA 23 – but it’s not that easy to make a goal out of it.

It can be worthwhile to come up with a technique that you use and perfect over and over again.

We have summarized which ones are suitable for this here:

In the heat of the moment, one is quickly tempted to simply implement the standards “somehow” and as quickly as possible. But that can also mean that you unknowingly give away a chance to score.
