Indonesia has halted cough medicines that may be behind acute kidney injury that has killed at least 133 people – most of them children under the age of five. This is stated by the country’s health minister.

Pending investigation, Indonesia now bans the sale of cough medicine and other liquid medicines in sugar solution. It is a “comprehensive ban” which the ministry considers necessary to prevent more deaths.

The country’s pharmaceuticals agency has identified five domestically manufactured products with a high content of ethylene glycol – best known as an ingredient in coolant.
