Italy now has a prime minister from the extreme right. Giorgia Meloni is the country’s first woman in the post, and took the oath of office on Saturday.
The new government takes office with the ceremony of President Sergio Mattarella in the Palazzo del Quirinale, the presidential palace in Rome.
Meloni’s party, the Brothers of Post-Fascist Italy, won 26 percent of the vote in the parliamentary election, becoming the largest party. It thus takes the leadership jersey in an alliance with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party and the other major far-right party Lega.
