With The Darkest Minds – The Survivors, 20th Century Studios (then Fox) started an attempt to establish a new major film series. The basis served eponymous fantasy novel by Alexandra Bracken, which has received several sequels in book form. However, the theatrical version failed.
With a slim budget of 34 million US dollars, the chances that the material would be a success on the big screen were not bad. Ultimately, however, the film could only a sobering $41 million import, which did not cover the additional marketing costs coming on the budget.
Fantasy flop: The Darkest Minds could become at least a trilogy
However, The Darkest Minds turned out not only to be a financial disappointment. Also The quality of the film could hardly inspire, so that the post-apocalyptic adventure is almost forgotten four years after its theatrical release. No wonder Part 2 didn’t get the green light.

There would have been plenty of material for a sequel: Bracken’s template includes four books as well as various short stories and novellas. The first trilogy tells Ruby’s story, who we also get to know as a protagonist in the film adaptation. She is played by Amandla Stenberg, known from The Hate U Give.
The Darkest Minds book series at a glance:
Filmmaker Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who directed the first part, expressed her interest at the time, too to direct The Darkest Mindes 2. Last but not least, the end of the prelude prepares the progress of the story. However, the sequel was never officially announced.
After The Darkest Minds failed in the cinema, one can speculate whether the story comes back to life in the form of a reboot, for example as a series on Disney+. Percy Jackson could be a role model: After two movies, the material is now being reworked in series form under the umbrella of the streaming service.
